What is Government? Do we need it?

We are about to begin studying Sparta and Athens and the origins of modern government.  In your own words, give a one sentence definition of the word "government."   Then, answer this question:  Do we need "government?"  Why or why not?  You may certainly use the internet, and your family to get some information, but your responses must be your own words and thoughts.
