Pick a Modern Story - What does it say about us?

Greek myths, plays and literature tell us what the Greeks thought was important.  Choose a modern book, movie or television show.  Write a paragraph to explain what it would tell others about our society.  See if you can get your parents to do it as well.

  1. The movie I chose was, Soul Surfer, because it has a life lesson to keep trying and never give up. When Bethany got her arm bitten off she did not stop believing in her dreams to be a pro suffer. Bethany is one of the people who is a believer and someone who I look up to.

  2. Ronda and Adam Ihasz. We chose the movie Wall Street because it depicts the good and bad of our financial world. The movie talks about greed, ethics, morals, triumph, and failure. The premise of the movie is the line between overcoming financial greed and ultimately doing what is right.

  3. The book I chose was Harry Potter because his bravery shows a life lesson to be brave and loyal. I like how he is loyal to people like Dumbledore, Ron, and Hermione.

  4. A tv series that shows modern stuff is The Office. It shows how we are making comedy at least a half hour a day. It also shows how an office gets bairly any work done. I bet one tenth of the modern world gets no work done in their jobs.

  5. I chose the film Waiting for Superman. The film analyzes the failure of public education and inner city lottery's for children who want to be accepted into charter schools. Charter schools are publicly funded independent schools.

  6. Gordon McClellan. We saw a movie last month called "Dolphin Tail", which is about a dolphin who lost her tail, and a boy who never gave up hope in trying to help her. It is an inspiring story about friendship, caring, and the ways we can relate to the natural world.

  7. I choose Extreme Makeover: Home Edition because they find families that would do anything to help others when they don't have much of a house to live in. I saw one show that was about a family that adopted 2 girls that were both autistic and a boy that had brittle bone disease and he could not walk. He breaks a bone every week. His playroom had a step down and he needs help getting into that room. The other sad part was that he was a dwarf child and he was only the size of a 18 month old and he would not get much bigger. But the crew came and redid their house for them and while they were doing that they sent him to Disney World. These people help families like this all the time and when I watch it, it makes me feel really special to have a safe home to live and so many nice friends, and these people don't have much of anything and they help others all the time and it makes me want to help others.

  8. Julie Crosier. It is the Christmas season - I always think of "Scrooge". Visiting Christmas past, present, and future - we all need to remember what is really important in life - friends and family - treating others as we would want to be treated. We can't take "things" with us but we can be remembered be others as honest caring people.

  9. I chose the nutcracker ballet because you don't talk in a ballet, but you show the audience with your body motions the story instead of talking like in a play. In the ballet, the nutcracker and the mouse king have a battle between good and evil. The mouse king is winning when Clara throws her slipper at the mouse king, and the nutcracker defeats the mouse king. Clara loved her nutcracker so much that she helped the nutcracker defeat the mouse king. The ballet shows that in our society we believe that love Is stronger than evil.

  11. A movie that says a lot about us I think is the Hulk. Because we fight for freedom just like the Hulk does and some of us have unique features like the Hulk. We have disguised moments to, when tricking or avoiding people. We protect each other when danger is around.

  12. The movie I choice is The Truth it shows how some lies become into a bigger problem than it already is. It shows how a funny joke becomes something that is not true. Gossip is one of the stories that The Truth teaches us. This movie is very similar to Cyber Bully one of the many movies I like also. These two movies both made me tear up when to becomes very intense. This movie I really recommend to everyone in our class.

  13. I chose the movie Cyber Bully because it is about a girl who is getting bullied on something like facebook and that is very modern because that happens alot and it shows that it is not good to bully people online and lying to everyone online on an account on like facebook or gmail

  14. Cake Boss is a show on TLC. It’s about a family who work together and bake cakes for people in New Jersey. These people are family and everyone works at the bakery. And of course, something always goes wrong whether it’s half the cake breaks or something isn’t finished in time. But at the end of the day they always figure out how to fix it and get the cakes delivered on time. This tells others that in our society problem solving and team work are important. I think this is a good show because it’s a family show that you can watch with a family too. It tells others that our society likes to spend time with family. Our society likes to celebrate special occasions and do it with family.

  15. I chose the movie Gracie: When Gracie’s beloved brother dies in a car accident. Gracie is determined to make the boys soccer team to fill in for her brother. Her father tries to stop her because he didn’t believe in her, but she didn’t give up, finally she made the team and in the championship game the team was tided ,and Gracie sored the winning gole in the last minute of the game. That movie taught me to never give up and to believe in your self even if some says you can’t do it. Gracie loved soccer and she tried out for that team for her brother with also inspired me.

  16. This moses name is Freddy, so since Freddy is so smart he goes looking for books to read. Freddy figures out how to open his cage and how to get of a shelf to the ground. What I think this means is that we have great imaginations.

  17. “I’ll be back”from Terminator
I chose it because the U.S.A gets revenge. (examples) Osama Binladen, Hitler and any body who has pulled a prank and got it back at them. Americans loves revenge. All movies have a problem and they beat the bad guy. That’s what Americans like to see. If a hockey player hits a kid/ pro wouldn’t you want revenge. It’s fun. It makes you feel good. It’s big hard payback. America craves revenge everywhere you go it shows.
