Your Myth About Vermont

We now know that one of the purposes of a myth is to explain the unexplainable.  Using the "Vermont God" you created in class, write a brief myth that explains one of the natural phenomena  that we spoke of in class (i.e. Maple Syrup, Deer Ticks, Green Mountains, the Scar on Equinox, etc).

  1. 11.01.11 The Goddess of Vermont Topic:How does it rain?

One Winter day, the goddess of Vermont was caring for her kids as she was constructing a mountain when she heard a scream of one of her four kids by one of her streams.
Her son, Winter, got carried away by a blizzard that had just come.
“Help Mom, help!” Before the goddess could reach Winter, he swept away in the shrieking wind and vanished.
“Oh no!” said the goddess. She started crying and walked back to her kids Spring and Summer and Fall. She told them the news and they were all very sad.
One Spring day, the goddess of Vermont was taking a walk with her husband and kids, still sad about Winter. Spring,Summer, and Fall trailed off and were playing in the trees. Spring, the youngest child, saw a few bunnies and deer and was eager to get a closer look. Summer and Fall were having to much fun to pay attention to Spring. Spring walked so far away that she got lost. The goddess and her husband just realized that Spring was gone and became very worried. “Spring, where are you?” Screamed the goddess and husband in unison. Nobody answered. “How could this have happened!” said the goddess. “Winter went missing and now Spring!” They were all sad and shocked.
One Summer day, the goddess of Vermont,Summer, and Fall were all still sad about Winter and Spring. They were running around at their home when the goddess heard footsteps outside the house. She ran out to find Summer running away!
“Why would she do that?” said the goddess of Vermont heavily breathing from running so hard. She could not catch up to her daughter and had lost her. She confronted her last child, Fall, and his face turned as pale as snow.
“I am so scared mama!” He exclaimed. “You see, since you named my brother and sisters after the seasons, I am next!”said Fall the son. “ First it was Winter, then it was Spring, then it was Summer, then it will be me!”
The goddess of Vermont started crying so hard that she flooded the house. Then she flooded the whole neighborhood! And to this day on, she still takes dearly care of her son, Fall.

Moral: Whenever the goddess of Vermont cries, it rains.

  2. One day Greena was leaning against a star when one of her Vermont people came to her and called to her and said” we need you to come and kill a creature called Toe . Please please” Pleaded the Vermonter “ I really-” “ stop” said Greena.” I will come help. Know show me were this toe is.The Vermonter went down to show Greena to Toe. When they finally got there Toe was gone. They looked all around. “Look” cried a Vermonter. She was pointing at a figure running up the Mountain. “ I will get”cried Greena. As she chased Toe, she realized it was MT. EQX. When she finally got to Toe, she through them as hard as she could. As Toe landed he had his hands by his side and his legs were out like a you. That is why the “cone” is here today!!!

  3. Long, long ago in Vermont a little girl wanted to have a water slide but her mom said no.
So she desided that instead of building one she would just use the still river. All she had to do was figure out a way to get the river to flow. Here’s what she did she got all her friends to blow across the river and to their surprise the river started flowing. They all went and found gigantic leaves that flowted. Then every body hopped in their leaves and flowted down the river. The next day the river didn’t stop flowing so they did it again. But it never stopped flowing. For years after the river still flowed. Now they know why because, Greenie, the Vermont God is always blowing on it. And so that is why the rivers flow.

  4. I think the god or goddess of Vermont wears green clothing and maybe they helped come up with either Mountains, Snow-Ice, Green Trees, and Rivers/floods. But what I think matters most to us are green trees because green trees help us breath and that there was a god or goddess of Vermont. I think the god or goddess had the power to help Mountains, Snow-Ice, Green Trees, or Rivers/ Floods. That is what I think.

  5. Myth About Vermont
One day in the heavens, the gods were playing ice hockey. But every time they took a step or hit the puck, little bits of the ice would swish and swirl down to earth. It landed on the mountains tops and settled on the rooftops of the not so green mountains and brown roofs of Vermont. Pretty soon, the ice was almost all gone and about 6 months of ice hokey had occured. So know every winter the gods play hockey in the heavens while we play in the snow on earth.

  6. How the Mountains in Vermont got There

A long time ago, the earth was flat. Tornadoes destroyed almost everything. Very few things survived. When ever there were floods, water would sit there until wind would blow it into the ocean. One day when the god of Vermont, Greenie, told the king of the gods, America, “If we don’t put some kind of protector, every single living thing on earth is going to die,”. America said “Well, we are not putting any thing to protect anything. Nothing on earth does any good to anything,”. Then Greenie got really mad because America always tries not to do anything for anyone if they are not as big and strong. Greenie pushed him, and when he hit the ground it made a bump in the earth. America did the same. That went on and on, and there were bumps everywhere. Not as many tornadoes came and destroyed things. The ‘mountains’ protected everything in places where heads and fists in the ground. That’s how the mountains got there.

  7. Emily C, I really like your comment because it said why the river flowed. It also tells about how you think the river started to flow. I think it has very good description and how Greenie and her friends blew on the river. I think it had very good detail. It sounds like a real Myth. Emily

He named it Maple Syrup. He had it every day. The only thing was he cut himself every day.He even sent some to his god friends they said they also loved it and thats how maple syrup was created.

Then he came every winter scince .But about one million years ago his heater broke at his vacation home so ever scince then it has been cold every winter. then he got so mad that every winter he blew frost allover Vermont. And no one came to fix his heater so he got really mad. And no one has tried to fix and no one will ever try to do it because he is so scary that if you do something wrong he will turn you into an ice cube.

  13. Sarah, I really like your comment because it shows how mountains came to be. I really liked how you described how Vermont pushed Greenie onto the ground and there became a little hill, and Vermont did the same thing as Greenie. Emiy

  14. Avert is as beautiful as newly fallen sow. Her hair as shinny as the ice. When a noreaster comes she is very angry at someone. When it snows she is a little mad. and when it’s spring she is happy with everyone.
One day as Avert was sitting in her throne she saw a sister and brother fighting and decided they needed to be taught a lesson. So a couple of days later they were both climbing Mt. Equinox so when they got to a certain point she made them fall really hard and they both scarped off a part of the mountain, and that’s how Mt. Equinox got the scar.

  18. One day While Hides was guarding the gates a messanger came. He said that a group of cyclops’s were coming to let all the dead spirits free, and that they were coming in 20 minutes. Hides had to think of something quick, he remembered that his dog, Cerberus was impossible to defeat. When the cyclops’s came they were terrible looking, they had teared up clothing and dirt all over them. They said the first spirit they were going to let out was Snow Flake Bentleys spirit and they did. Cerberus and Hides killed all of the cyclops’s but couldn’t catch the spirit. And because of that the fact still stands that no snowflake is the same.
