Democracy in the News

Find an article or event in the news that you think relates to what you have been learning about Democracy.  In the blog, post a brief summary of what you have found and why you think it is important to talk about when we discuss democracy.

NOTE: Democracy comes from the Greek words "Demos" (meaning "people") and "Krateo" (meaning "rule")

  1. Right now in New Hampshire people are casting their votes in the Republican primary. Most citizans in New Hampshire think that Mitt Romney will win although some citizans want Jon Huntsman to win. Because Romney said he enjoyed firing people and Hutsman said he liked making jobs. This relates to what we have been learning about democracy because everyone gets to vote.

  2. In our country out of all the people that can vote less than half do.The government is trying to get more people to vote so they can have power.A lot of people do not vote is because they think that their vote does not count.I think this is important because people should have power to do things like voting.

  3. In some countrys in the United States of America I heard they couldn't afford to go to a gym or someplace to vote they just stayed home instead of something taking them for something they deserve to do. Or just a bus that could take people to vote I think thats not fair.

  5. In the News it says that there are a bunch of candidates running to be the person to run against Obama. There are elections in each state. The next State is North Carolina. The three main candidates running are Mitt Romney, John Paul and Jon Huntsman. It relates to what we have been talking about in class because it is on voting in elections.

  6. On January 1st Hungary turned away from democracy. It happened so quickly people did not get to vote about it. Other places in Europe were so surprised! This has never happened so quickly before. It also has never happened in the European Country before!

  8. Right now people are voting for president and in some places governors some people tuning for president will try to get one or two states votes. This is a democracy because different people could become president and to do that they rely on citizens.
At the same time it's kind of not a democracy because there's one person that has the most power.

  11. Sometimes at night I tend to watch the Ed show which is the news, and debates. One of the parts of the commentary of Obama. The Democrats are in it for the middle class & the lower class. What Obama was saying is during president Bush he had a surplus Which is were the government gets money to owed. The Republicans strategy is they want to prove that they can fit the financial policies because Bush put Obama into -16 bill of debt to china. All of this is leading up towards the presidential debates.

  13. Yesterday in New Hampshire, the republican party held a primary to see who will become the nominee for president. Mitt Romney won. I think this is important because we the people of America get to choose who our president will be and the president rules the whole entire country.

  14. On September 17, 2011 in Zuccotti park in New York really close to wall street thousands of protesters occupied the park to protest against wealth inequality, corporate influence of goverment, populisim, and scocial democrocy. The protesters slept in Zuccotti park for months until the police made them leave. Now everywhere people are doing this. I think this relates a lot to the play/reading we are doing in english
